How we came to be the
"Scent Chicks"
Scent ChickS, was begun by two sisters, Pat (the still blonde)
and Joce, (the former brunette), now known as the "Scent Chicks"
in the spring of 2004. It is located in Ottawa, ON. THAT IS
UNTIL DECEMBER 20,2007 WHEN WE CEASED DOING
BUSINESS.
WHY AND HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
IF YOU KEEP ON READING TO FIND OUT ABOUT US, YOU
WILL SEE THAT WHAT PAT & JOCE WANTED WAS TO HAVE
A SMALL HOME BASED BUSINESS THAT WOULD BRING US TOGETHER
AND ALLOW US TO HAVE FUN AT THE SAME TIME. SCENT CHICKS
CERTAINLY DID.
BUT OUR PRODUCTS BECAME SO POPULAR THAT OFTEN WE HAD TO
STAY UP TILL MIDNIGHT TO PRODUCE THE PRODUCTS WE HAD
PROMISED. PAT'S HOUSE DID NOT SEEM LIKE A REAL HOME ANYMORE
BUT MORE LIKE A PRODUCTION PLANT. WE SOMETIMES HAD TO
ENLIST FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS TO HELP US PACKAGE.
THAT WASN'T WHAT WE WANTED TO DO. IN ORDER TO KEEP UP
WITH ORDERS WE WOULD HAVE HAD TO HIRE STAFF. THAT MEANT
GIVING UP OUR QUALITY CONTROL OVER EACH & EVERY PRODUCT
WHICH WAS AGAINST OUR PHILOSOPHY. IT ALSO MEANT WE WOULD
HAVE TO MOVE OUT OF PAT'S HOME AND OPEN UP A LAB TO MAKE
OUR PRODUCTS. THAT WAS A NO-NO. IT ALSO MEANT WORKING
ALMOST FULL TIME. WE HAD CHOSEN EARLY RETIREMENT SO A 12
MONTH A YEAR JOB WAS OUT OF THE QUESTION.WORST OF ALL,
WE WOULD HAVE HAD TO INCREASE OUR PRICES. THAT WAS
TOTALLY AGAINST WHAT WE HAD SET OUT TO DO. AND TO TOP IT
ALL OFF,WE WOULD HAVE HAD TO TAKE OUT SMALL BUSINESS
INSURANCE. THE PREMIUMS WERE SO HIGH WE WOULD HAVE HAD
TO WORK FULL TIME & WE COULDN'T HAVE DEVOTED AS MUCH
PERSONAL ONE-TO-ONE TIME TO OUR CUSTOMERS WHICH IS WHAT
WE PRIDED OURSELVES ON. ERGO: WE DECIDED TO CLOSE UP SHOPPE.
SAD, BUT TRUE. WE HAVE HAD A LOVELY RUN. IT'S ALMOST TOO
BAD IT WAS SO GOOD. WE HAVE ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT
ESPECIALLY OUR WONDERFUL CLIENTS.
IF WE CAN FIND AN ACCEPTABLE SOLUTION, WE'LL DO LIKE THE
TERMINATOR: " WE'LL BE B..A..C..K...! ".

SO IT'S NOT "ADIEU !" IT IS SIMPLY "AU REVOIR !"
Iin our former lives both of us were in caring professions, and
both of us took early retirement. It really didn't take us long to
find out that retirement simply wasn't for us. So we decided to
start a little business together. Our aim was to do something
that would combine our strengths and interests, make us happy,and help
bring a smile to others because that's what we really enjoyed.
But what?
Both of us have loved bath, beauty, and spa products since we were little
girls. What girls, both big and small, don't? However, we often had a
hard time finding "just the right product". Just as in "Goldilocks", most of
the commercial products we tried seemed either too strong or too weak.
Some of the soaps we used dried our skin. Or didn't lather. Or didn't
smell great. Or weren't pretty enough. And when they were pretty, they
were too expensive for everyday use,so we had to ration their use. We
learned to make our own soap from our own recipes as a hobby. And we
experimented until our recipes were "just right".
So, it seemed only natural that we decided to turn our
shared hobby into our shared business. After all, over time,
we had been giving some of our homemade soap to our friends. Once they
had used it, they kept asking us for more. Since we only made our soap as
a hobby, we weren't always able to oblige. But we knew if we made soap
as a business that we could offer something good. But what would we call
this business of ours?
We bandied quite a few names about but couldn't find
anything satisfactory until one of our daughters, watching us
experiment in trying to improve our already good recipes,
laughingly said: "Well, you Scent Chicks are at it again".
OUR NAME WAS FOUND !

And our hobby evolved into an enjoyable business.
Our small, Canadian, home based, sister-run business
prides itself on offering a delightful variety of top
quality bath and beauty products, great personal
service, and affordable prices.
Everything we offer you is lovingly hand crafted by us
in small batches in our own homes under strict control
for optimum freshness. So, don't be surprised if there
are slight variations in product colour or appearance from one batch to the
next. As we use natural ingredients whenever possible and since Mother
Nature doesn't always make everything exactly the same there are bound
to be some slight differences. What never changes is the quality. It's
always the best.
We do everything ourselves, from inventing the
recipes, making the products, designing and printing
our labels, packaging, shipping and delivering the
orders, designing and maintaining our web shoppe site plus
many other little details. We do not use a Web
specialist because we want to be able to
modify it at will. Plus,by acting this way we are able to keep our costs
down. That allows us to price our products very moderately so that as many
people as possible can use and benefit from them.
Our biggest challenge is the fact that we live in two different towns,two
provinces apart, not an easy way to run a business.
We manage our soap making adventures by running
away from our husbands for a week at a time to
make our products, by keeping our phone lines open and
by using e-mail constantly. But we've done it. Our
shoppe is open and we are very are happy you have
found us.
ACTUALLY, THAT ALSO HAS DONE US IN. JOCE COULDN'T COME UP
TO OTTAWA AS OFTEN AS WOULD HAVE BEEN NECESSARY TO KEEP
OUR BUSINESS GOING ON A FULL TIME BASIS.. BUT THAT'S LIFE.
WE'RE LOOKING INTO SOMETHING ELSE MORE PRACTICAL FROM A
DISTANCE STANDPOINT. SO KEEP TUNED.
Currently we sell mostly at craft shows and at home on appointment. In the
summer you'll find us outdoors at small town events and celebrations. We
are at "Art in the Park" every year. A list of our upcoming shows can be
seen on our "Calendar of Events" page.
We have plans to add more products to our regular line, as well as adding
unique items here and there that will only be available for a short amount
of time. Our scent list is also always being added to, so we invite you to
keep coming back. And please do not hesitate to make suggestions on our
"Contact Us" page.If at any time you have a special request or would like to
drop us a line, please feel free to do so! Since we are a small company, we
treat our customers like friends instead of like numbers. If you drop us an
email or call, we'll give you our full attention. Do understand that since we

care. It's just there are only so many hours in the day and we may be
